Character Bank – Murdered Sister

As with some of my other prompts, I don’t have a specific inspiration for this. It was an attempt to create an angst prompt that didn’t really go the way I wanted it to. In addition it’s hard to say if this is really a character bank or a writing prompt, but I decided to go with character bank, since that focuses on the character more than the story.

Depending a lot on your genre, I think this is a character that you could put into a book and while her story is probably going to be relevant to the plot in someway, it doesn’t have to be, because every character has their own story about them and not all of them are the main story. It could be interesting to have a character with this kind of backstory and not make her the main character. In fact given that she has always taken a back seat to her sister, it might be exactly the way to show case that point.

One thing this prompt definitely isn’t is wholesome. It’s about a bad sibling relationship that got worse with time. I have three siblings whom I have, over the years, gotten along with to various degrees of good, but always I would describe the relationship as good. We’ve had our differences. Who hasn’t? At the end of the day though, we love each other and look out for each other.

This character doesn’t have that.

This relationship is extremely toxic and it’s up to you to decide the whys of that. In addition to that, you have a character who is now dealing with what is probably pretty mixed emotions. She had a relationship with her sister that was so bad she considered killing her, but now she’s gone and she’s trying to find out why. Does she wish things were different or is she just curious? There are all sorts of things you can do with this character. What do you think you would do with her? Would she take front stage or would she be a secondary character?
